To prevent animal diseases being brought into the country, various conditions have to be satisfied when importing animals, animal products and foodstuffs. These depend on the country of origin. Trade in wild animals and protected plants is regulated by permits.
The import database assists you in the commercial importation of animals, animal products, foods and plants. Select the appropriate criteria to obtain details of the import conditions.
Explanations on the database
- Third countries are all countries apart from the EU Member States, Northern Ireland, Iceland and Norway. Imports of live animals and germinal products from Iceland are subject to the conditions for imports from third countries, except for animals from aquaculture.
- Note: Overseas territories that are politically part of the EU may nevertheless have "third country" status for disease prevention and control purposes. Please contact the FSVO if you are uncertain about anything.
- Information on the importing of foods by private travellers can be found here.
- Information on travelling with pets, including the online information tool “Crossing a border with my dog, cat or ferret”, can be found here.
