Report Animal Experimentation Statistics 2024

In 2024, compared to the previous year, a total of 72 669 fewer animals were used in animal experiments. However, the number of animal uses in severity degree 3 increased by 990. Around 36 % of animal experiments were conducted in severity degree 0, 30 % in severity degree 1, 29 % in severity degree 2 and 5 % in severity degree 3.

The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO), as the competent federal authority under Article 36 of the Animal Welfare Act of 16 December 2005 (SR 455; TSchG), publishes the annual statistics on animal experiments on the website www.tv-statistik.ch. In compiling and publishing these statistics, the FSVO takes into account the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals used for Experimental and other Scientific Purposes. In accordance with the Convention, the laboratory animals are classified into the corresponding categories. Researchers must report all uses of laboratory animals annually. If animals are used multiple times within one year, each use must be recorded in the statistics.
