Channelling

Certain animal by-products from third countries that may have a higher risk potential may only be transported from a border control point to the establishment of destination under special conditions.

Certain animal by-products from third countries that may be associated with a higher potential for causing damage may only be transported from a border control point (in Switzerland or the EU) to the establishment of destination under special conditions. When products of this type are imported, the channelling procedure applies.

Approval and procedure

The establishment of destination requires an additional permit to receive products under the channelling procedure. Approval solely as an import establishment is not sufficient. The establishment of destination must apply to the competent cantonal authority for an additional permit. A certain length of time may elapse between submission of the application and publication on the list of "Swiss establishments - animal by-products".

Approved establishments of destination are entered in the list of "Swiss establishments - animal by-products" with the abbreviation "CHAN". See List of approved Swiss establishments. The "CHAN" designations are constantly being updated. The list of "Swiss establishments - animal by-products" is accessible to both the Swiss and the European border control points.

Goods imported under the channelling procedure are only released if the establishment appears on the corresponding list. Establishments of destination that receive goods under the channelling procedure are required to inform the competent cantonal authority that they have received a shipment of this kind within three working days of it being released by the border control point.

These regulations are governed by the ordinances on the import, transit and export of animals and animal products in trade with third countries IETAO-DS-EDI and IETAO-DS.
