As external FSVO sites assigned to the Animal Health and Welfare Division, the Centre for Proper Housing of Ruminants and Pigs is operated in collaboration with Agroscope in Posieux. Meanwhile, the Centre for Proper Housing of Poultry and Rabbits is operated in partnership with Aviforum and the Animal Welfare Division of the Veterinary Public Health Institute at the University of Bern in Zollikofen.
The two centres deal with the following tasks for the species in question:

  • Testing and approving mass-produced installations and housing systems
  • Conducting research projects on animal welfare issues related to the keeping of livestock as a basis for the assessment of housing systems in connection with animal welfare legislation (see also under Research)
  • Supporting the cantonal authorities in enforcing animal welfare legislation for livestock
  • Providing information and advice on the proper and legally compliant keeping of livestock
  • Maintaining contacts with foreign authorities and research institutions
