Import of animals and animal products from third countries
When importing animals and animal products from third countries, special import conditions apply. Find out about the conditions, as well as protective measures and species conservation requirements. It is not possible to import animals and goods from all countries.
Imports from third countries: the basics
Third countries are all countries except EU member states, Northern Ireland, Iceland and Norway. For the import of live animals and germinal products from Iceland, the conditions for imports from third countries apply, with the exception of aquaculture species.
Please note: Overseas territories that are politically part of the EU may also be deemed third countries from an animal disease control perspective.
Imports of animals and goods with an animal component from third countries are only possible subject to specified conditions. They may only be imported from authorised countries, regions and establishments. To prevent animal diseases being introduced into Switzerland, different requirements apply depending on the country of origin.
Animal products include all products that are potential carriers of animal diseases. They include animal by-products and germinal products, as well as foods that are (partly) of animal origin, such as cheese and meat. For the regulations that apply to foods, see:
