Protective measures for the import of animals and animal products from third countries
When importing animals and animal products from third countries, protective measures may apply if there are health risks. Find out what restrictions are currently in force and when channelling is required for animal by-products.
Current protective measures
In the event of animal disease outbreaks or other risks, additional restrictions or import bans may apply to animals and animal products from third countries. These override the ordinary import conditions and also apply to permits already issued.

Channelling
Animal by-products that pose an increased animal health or food safety risk may only be transported directly from a border control post in Switzerland or the EU to the establishment of destination, subject to special conditions.
This is referred to as channelling in the import conditions.
The establishment of destination requires an additional permit to receive such consignments. Approval solely as an import establishment is not sufficient. You can apply for a permit from the responsible cantonal authority. It can take some time for the establishment to be published on the list of Swiss establishments for animal by-products.
Approved establishments are added to this list with the note ‘CHAN’. The notes are updated on an ongoing basis. The list is accessible to both the Swiss and the European border control posts.
Goods imported under the channelling procedure will only be released if the establishment features on the list. Establishments of destination must report receipt to the responsible cantonal authority within one working day.
