Swiss 3R Competence Centre

The 3R principles (replace, reduce and refine) are aimed at replacing animal experiments, using fewer animals and reducing the constraint of animals used for experiments.

The increasing number of animals used in academic research demands action so that this trend is sustainably overcome. Therefore, together with academia and the pharmaceutical industry, the federal government wants to emphasize that the implementation of the 3Rs has increasingly to be put into practice.

In its report on postulate 12.3660 “Future of the 3R Research Foundation Switzerland and Alternatives to Animal Experiments”, the Federal Council recommended that a 3R Competence Centre be set up.

The Swiss 3R Competence Centre (3RCC) was founded in March 2018 and consists of a head office in Bern and a network of persons responsible for the 3Rs in the universities. It receives funding from the federal government (State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI and the FSVO and Interpharma. The academic institutions contribute to covering the costs of the 3RCC. The mandate of the 3RCC includes 3R research, education and communication.
