Diseases and control measures

The European Parliament and the Council adopted the Regulation (EU) 2016/429 on transmissible animal diseases ("Animal Health Law") in March 2016. It has been applicable since 21 April 2021. The Commission has adopted the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687 on 17 December 2019.

This Regulation supplements the Regulation (EU) 2016/429 of the European Parliament and the Council, as regards rules for the prevention and control of certain listed diseases and provides for measures in case of official suspicion of certain animal diseases, establishment of restricted (protection/surveillance zones) and infected zones, prohibitions and conditions for authorised movements from those zones.

The EU has a set of specific legislation for a number of animal diseases depending on their potential social and economic impact.

This includes:

  • notification obligations
  • diagnostic methods
  • measures to be applied in case of suspicion and confirmation of disease
  • and, where applicable, regionalisation measures.
