Protective measures for imports of food from third countries
Foods from third countries must not pose any risk to human or animal health. In the event of animal disease outbreaks or other risks, additional restrictions or bans may apply to foods from third countries.
Current protective measures
Protective measures take precedence over and apply in addition to the import conditions that are normally in effect and/or to permits that have already been issued.
The Commission of the European Union (EU) has determined that certain animal feeds and foods of non-animal origin from third countries must be controlled more intensively at defined points of entry on the external border of the EU.
Foods contaminated as a result of the Chernobyl accident
Special regulations apply to the import and placing on the market of foods contaminated with caesium 137 as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear plant.
