Swiss Animal Health Strategy 2010+

The objective of the Swiss Animal Health Strategy 2010+ is to protect and improve the health of domestic and farm animals. It defines five strategic objectives and describes implementation measures in a number of action areas.

Prevention is better than cure

Intensive international trade in animals and goods and climate change are creating new challenges. Animal diseases that were formerly unknown in Switzerland, such as African horse sickness and bluetongue, are new risks that have to be taken seriously. Equally, older epidemic conditions such as foot-and-mouth-disease can re-emerge at any time.

Five strategic objectives

Working in close collaboration with the cantonal veterinary offices, the FSVO has formulated five strategic objectives that aim to protect and improve the health of domestic and farm animals in Switzerland:

  • The cantonal veterinary services standardise enforcement and promote intercantonal collaboration.
  • Animal owners and other affected people, e.g. veterinarians, are more closely involved in decision-making processes and take some of the responsibility for monitoring and controlling animal diseases.
  • Research into animal health is guided by the needs of animal owners and the public veterinary service. Collaboration with the international research community is intensified.
  • International networking and active cooperation with institutions and organisations involved in animal health are expanded.

Five action areas

The motto of the Swiss Animal Health Strategy 2010+ is "Active prevention - Decisive action!" To achieve these objectives, the strategy describes measures in the following action areas:

  • Prevention
  • Crisis prevention
  • Control of animal epidemics and economically important animal diseases
  • International collaboration
  • Science, research and development.

Implementing these measures will require the commitment of a large number of individuals, companies and organisations involved in animal health. This means veterinarians, authorities, companies along the food chain, research facilities and, above all, animal owners.
