Aquaculture animals

Veterinary rules applicable to imports of live aquaculture animals for farming purposes from third countries into Switzerland.
All imports of live aquaculture animals need a written approval by the FSVO in advance.
For information on imports of ornamental aquaculture animals: see specific chapter.
For live aquaculture animals intended for entering the foodstuff market: see chapter fishery products.

The conditions mentioned below apply with reservation as to import bans, temporary sanitary restrictions and special conditions in force at the time of import:

General conditions

Aquaculture animals means fish, aquatic crustaceans and molluscs (including shell-fish / mussels) at any stage of development (incl. gametes, eggs, semen), even those from the wild intended for a farm.

Specific conditions

Since certain alien fish and decapod crustacean species have an extremely negative effect on the native fauna, their importation is strictly prohibited. Details see Verordnung zum Bundesgesetz über die Fischerei (SR 923.01) art. 7 - 9 and annex 3.

Conditions relating to conservation of biodiversity

Since aquaculture animals originating from third countries may have a negative effect on the native fauna, an official written permission is required prior to any imports. Submit an application at least 3 weeks prior to the intended importation:
Conditions relating to endangered species, e.g. sturgeons: see chapter International species protection / CITES.

Cantonal regulations

Keep the cantonal veterinary services informed in advance on your intended imports and ask them for the cantonal regulations in force.

Border veterinary checks and TRACES

Consignments are subject to documentary (e.g. original certificates) and at random physical checks at the border inspection post. Details see chapters on Border veterinary controls and TRACES.
